We started out this morning about 10:30
and headed over to "Fort Ord" at least where it use
to be. Rick was stationed there when he was in the Army. We drove
in and within a few mins. Rick had found his barricks and some
of the old haunts. Was quite a stirring moment when he found the
memorial stone for his unit...Bravo Company 5th Battalion, 21st
Light Infantry Division.
From there we headed up the coast. The road
from Monterey is not quite as spectacular as the road from Santa
Barbara but it was much slower. The road did switchback after
switchback. No car sickness tho.
We then did a jog off of PCH 1 to San Jose
and the Winchester Mansion. This mansion was built by the widow
of the maker of the Winchester rifle. Her infant daughter and
her husband both died within a few months of each other and she
was afraid that the "SPIRITS" were angry. So she went
to a seance and was told by the "spirits" that she should
move west...build a house....and never stop building onto it.
So that is what she did. She had a full time carpenter and the
construction was 24 hours a day ..7 days a week. There were windows
in the floor, doors that lead nowhere and stairs that went to
the ceiling. Quite a cool house tho. I will have to make a page
just for this mansion after I get home but some of the pictures
are here now.
We made it to San Francisco and headed straight
for the pier. Got on the last boat to Alcatraz. ALCATRAZ AT NIGHT too cool. That may have to be another Whole page also.
